Grupo Arcano GRUPO ARCANO is a Salsa band that brings the best from a rich tradition, as well as the hottest trends in salsa music. To packed dance floors, Grupo Arcano plays the hits from decades past as well as explosive original compositions. Its members, whose expertise in a range of musical backgrounds including jazz, soul, merengue, funk, and classical, unite to perform some of the most exciting Salsa music in New York City.
Drawing much of its influence from Salsa greats such as El Gran Combo and Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Grupo Arcano has created a sound that sets them apart from most other local bands, surely making them is one of New York City's newest and hottest salsa bands.
Many would argue that the salsa genre was officially born when the song “Salsa y Bembé” by Jaime “Jimmy” Sabater, appeared on fellow Puerto Rican, Joe Cuba’s (Gilberto Miguel Calderon) album, “Stepping Out” in 1962. In any case, timbales musician, vocalist and songwriter, Sabater can be said to be a progenitor of the salsa genre and one of it best known proponents throughout a career that continues to this day.
Sabater was born on 11 April, 1936 in New York City of Puerto Rican parents originally from Ponce, Puerto Rico. His neighbors in the New York “barrio” were none other than Tito Puente, Luis Cruz, Willi Bobo, Monchito Muñoz and other prominent Latin musicians. In that great laboratory featuring talented artists from Cuba, Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries, in an atmosphere charged with the excitement of experimentation, Sabater dedicated himself to becoming a musician. He studied music, including voice and learned to play the piano and then the timbales.
In 1957, Sabater acheived perhaps his first great success as a vocalist with the song, “To Be With You”, written by Nick Jiménez (music) and Willie Torres (lyrics), which he recorded with Joe Cuba’s band. Sabater was an old friend of Cuba since they had met in 1951.
Sabater remained with the Joe Cuba band until 1979, and was a part of the bugalu (boogaloo; fusion of Latin rhythm and American R&B - rhythm and blues) fad during its heyday between 1966 and 1968. Sabater himself wrote several notable songs in that style: “Bang, Bang” and “Oh Yeah”, both of which appeared on the “Wanted, Dead or Alive” album and helped it sell over a million copies.
While Sabater also figured prominently on Cuba’s album of boleros: “The Velvet Voice of Jimmy Sabater” in 1967, he also recorded a number of solo albums following that. These included Solo in 1969, El Hijo de Teresa, the following year, To Be With You, in 1977 and Gusto in 1980.
Sabater has also appeared on dozens of other albums as either timables musician or vocalist, over the course of his prodigious career. These include: the Fania All-Stars Eddie Palmieri, the Cesta All-Stars, Jimmy Bosch and other productions featuring various artists.
Sabater’s most recent efforts was “Mo” with José Mangual, Jr. and his band, Son Boricua on the Cobo label in 2002 and with the Spanish Harlem Orchestra; recording “Un Gran Dia En El Barrio” in that same year.

Show the World Latin Soul
Alex*Cuba is a Latin Grammy, and two-time Juno Award winner! Born and raised in Cuba, his music reflects primarily Latin and African influences, with a mix of funk, jazz and pop.
Singer-songwriter Alex*Cuba hails from Artemisa, Cuba (1 hour west of Havana) and resides in Smithers, B.C. (14 hours north of Vancouver). Musically, he lives everywhere in between. His trademark sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and rock chords subtly subvert commonly held notions of what Cuban music is. Alex is on the vanguard, crafting a cross-cultural sound that mirrors his geographical journey. Not tied to tradition, this Cuban-Canadian prefers his vintage Gibson over el sencerro (cowbell) anytime. Forgoing conventional stereotypes that typify much of the Latin music landscape, Alex is instead defining his own "Latin Soul" genre. Like the handful of unique, genre-defying artists before him, Alex' uncompromising "go your own road" approach was difficult and lonely at first, but is now beginning to pay dividends. He has won two JUNO Awards (2006 and 2008) and a SOCAN Award (2009) in Canada, a Latin Grammy Award (2010) for Best New Artist and is nominated for a 2011 Grammy Award in the Best Latin Pop Album category.
“With Alex it's just skin on steel, with solos that often lead to bleeding fingers... crafting songs that cut through linguistic and cultural barriers like a machete through sugarcane.”

2011 marks the 10th Anniversary of Neruda Productions. The company has grown from humble roots — founder Isabel Cisterna self-producing a single show, Chilean playwright Ariel Dorfman's Death and the Maiden, in 2001 — into a company that presents International World Music Super-Groups like Quilapayun and Inti-Illimani Histórico. A Neruda season now encompasses over half a dozen concerts, a summer festival and other events and programs. This year will prove to be another dynamic and vibrant year for our concerts and community events, including: Café Intimo | Deseo : Words, Whispers & Desires, Kites of Joy & Freedom Festival, Show the World: Latin Jazz Festival with Juno award winner ALEX*CUBA, and First Dance A Queer Dance Theatre Performance.
It`s hard to believe that Neruda Productions has been bringing a vibrant variety of art forms from many cultures, traditional and emerging for 10 years now. We`re pulling out all the stops this year and exploring lots of new things as well as reminiscing about past events.
We have a new 10th anniversary logo, have started the ambitious BE program, are selling artists’ music online through PWYWO and so much more. We hope you`ll continue to travel with us as we embark on this leg of our journey. There's so much we want to share with you this year.
We are looking forward to the fall with our continuing Concert Series Show the World, including more world music, jazz performances and Juno Award winner K'NAAN! Over the past ten years, Neruda Productions has been striving to build bridges between communities in Waterloo Region with music, dance, drama, and visual arts from around the world.
DJ Gury Gury discovered Salsa music while living and studying Spanish in la Habana Cuba. “I lived on the same street as the legendary el Tosco of NG la Banda and would wake up every afternoon listening to the sounds of their rehearsal" says Gury Gury. This inspired him to become involved in the world of Latin music.
He discovered his passion as a DJ, in his basement in the early 80's mixing Duran Duran songs on a 2 track. In 1986 after forming the legendary Toronto Punk Rock label X Records, Gary began an internship on CHRY 105.5 FM out of York University. After numerous shows and promotions Gary X, as he was known then, became the music director in 1989. He remained in that position until 1994 when he also gave up his show and other club DJing duties to travel the world.
Upon returning to Canada in 2001 the Salsa bug had bitten Gury. On May 1st 2003 he started a radio program on CFRU 93.3 FM called Viejoteca.
Viejoteca is Canada’s number one Salsa radio program and is listened to around the globe via the internet by more than 100 000 people a week. Since then Gury Gury has been asked to be the resident DJ at the E-Bar in Guelph Ontario Canada. The Latin Fiesta at the E-Bar has been recognized as the premier Salsa night in the area by Echo Magazine and at 9 years is the longest running Salsa night in the area.
He is the founder of the Salsa Ethica movement, as well as the popular local festival the Northern Salsa Experience. In 2009 he also founded Salsa Clandestina. In September of 2006 Gury Gury launched his 24 hour online radio station at Live365.com network. Gury Gury has also been responsible for bringing some great live music to the Guelph region; acts such as Bio Ritmo, Bryan Vargas, Cache, Salsatika, Son Ache, Cassava and many more. He was the music director for the Guelph Multicultural Festival in 2004-2006 and has been a performer for the Guelph Jazz Festival since 2004.
DJ Gury Gury has also DJ'ed at various other events in Colombia (Nuestra Herencia-Cali, Tin Tin Deo-Cali), England (Salsology-Manchester, 1st Guest DJ for Café Mambo Project-Nottingham, Wharf-Birmingham at the longest running Salsa night in the UK), Spain (Opened for band La Sucursal S.A. at Fiesta La Alegria del Barrio-Barcelona), Toronto (S & M Expo, Toronto Salsa Festival, Opened for Alfredo De La Fe, Opened for Bio Ritmo Canadian Tour among many other events) Montreal, Washington DC (Mambo Scene.com Opening Party)Hamilton, Rochester, New York (Special Guest DJ for Orquesta Dee Jay for their 30 year Anniversary Party), Chicago (Chicago Salsa Festival 2008-2010), Cleveland (Baila Duro), Kitchener and London.
Gury Gury has become an internationally recognized Dj and continues to travel and play special events around the globe.
