Viejoteca Top 25 for May 2008

There is a new Number 1 on the Viejoteca chart this month the new release from Gilberto Burgos y su Orchestra "Salsa Romantica Agresiva" makes it way to the top of the Viejoteca charts. The re release of Ray Barretto's the Message stays in the top 25 at number 14. Another important new release making its way to Number 6 on the Viejoteca list is the new CD from Envidia Pedro Brull y Jerry Medina's "Estacion Candela" . Sure to be a classic is the band of youngster from Puerto Rico Orquesta la Remembernezas make their debut in the top 10 at number 8. Making it's debut at number 5 is the digital only new release from Latin Soul Records Featuring great numbers from la Protesta, Jose Chepito Areas, Orquesta la Moderna amogest others. Lots of material from the Emuisca vaults again with a strong showing of Fania re releases. Viejoteca Top 25 of March 2008

There is a new Number 1 on the Viejoteca chart this month the compilation release from Colombian DJ Chino makes it way to the top of the Viejoteca charts. The re release of Ray Barretto's the Message stays in the top 10 at number 10. Another important new release making its way to Number 4 on the Viejoteca list is the new CD by Jesus Pagan y su Orquesta entitled Salsa de la Mata, this is possibly the best CD jacket of the year. Sure to be a classic is the Cortijo tribute from New York's Aurora y Zon del Barrio a refreshing change. Making it's debut at number 13 is the new release from Gilbeto Burgos y su Orquesta. The one is getting lots of request action on the Live 365 portion of Viejoteca. This is to be a classic release of 2008. Lots of material from the Emuisca vaults again with a strong showing of Fania re releases. Lots of new entries into the Top 25 this month including Canada's own Rumba Calzada and Cheo Navarro's tributo to the salsa de ayer.

January Top 25 2008

The compilation from emuisca of Hector Lavoe entitled “La Voz” has made it to Number 1 on the Viejoteca chart this month. The re release Crillo which had been Number 1 is now number 4. Another important new release making its way to Number 2 is the Latin Soul Records and DJ Duste comp entitled “Que Viva la Salsa Dura!!” Sure to be in the top of the year picks coming in January. Making it's debut at number 15 is the new release from Viejoteca favourite Luis Mangual. The title track is getting lots of request action on the Live 365 portion of Viejoteca. December Viejoteca Top 25

The Lebron Brothers has unseated the New Swing Sextet as the Number 1 CD on the Viejoteca chart this month. The re release Crillo which has been released by emusica. Vancouver's Tanga has remained in the top 25of the Viejoteca chart at number 17. Tanga's latest release Simmer and Serve is a mix of Cuban style salsa and latin jazz. Viejoteca November 2007 TOP 25

The New Swing Sextet's as yet unreleased CD is number 1 on the Viejoteca chart again this month. The CD Back to the Street is going to be released by the Fania label sometime in November look for it online or in stores. Vancouver's Tanga has remained in the top 10 of the Viejoteca chart. Tanga's latest release Simmer and Serve is a mix of Cuban style salsa and latin jazz. Making it's debut at number 21 is the Colombia band la 33 with their new release entitled Gozalo! DJ Duste & Latin Soul Records 

Que Viva La Salsa Dura 

 

Once again Latin Soul Records has done it again. Andrés Padua in collaboration with Norway's DJ Duste have put together a great collection of Salsa Dura that every aficionado of salsa needs to have. Latin Soul records has been bringing us the hardest in salsa dura re release over the past year. Overshadowed by the giants of Fania Sr. Padua has put out a series of great discs including classic by Orquesta Dee Jay, la Fantastica, Joe Acosta and Papo Felix y Rey Rodriguez. On this project he has teamed up with Norway superstar salsa DJ Duste for a collection of smokin' dura sounds. The special treat of this 2 CD package is disc 2's remix done by Duste.

The music, is sweet swinging salsa..... From the opening riff of Porfi Jimenez's Tu Sufriras to the closing soul sounds of Joe Acosta this CD "Que Viva la Salsa Dura" is a 100% smoker. Favourites tracks here are from los Astros, Mike Roasrio and Ray Terrace. This disc includes dance floor classics like Hong Kong Mambo and Trompeta y Flauta which I do enjoy, but have heard many times before. The plus on these 2 tracks is that on the remix disc DJ Duste brings new life to these classics. The other original 10 tracks are tracks from lesser known artists from the 70's. The sounds are hard New York sounds and will be a pleasant surprise for even the most knowledgeable of salseros.

Duste's treatment of these tracks are classy he doesn't stray too far from the original swing and beat of the songs. Duste has shown his love of his craft and of salsa dura with these soon to be classic remixes. I have ventures to play some of his remixes in the past at my club dates and people are always refreshed to hear a fresh version of an old song done well.

Kudos to Andy and Duste for this truly amazing labor of Love.

For the first time in the history of the Viejoteca charts an artist has remained on the top of the charts for four months. Orquesta Dee Jay's re-release on Latin Soul Records "Forget It" has remained at # 1 for the fourth month. The rumours that the band is reforming are true they are currently putting together songs for the live shows. Cuban band Valle Sonhas claimed 2nd place on the chart with strong support from listener requests, this recording was recorded in Canada's north. Lots of material from the Emuisca vaults with a strong showing of Fania re releases. The as yet unreleased New Swing Sextet snuck into the top 10. Los Salseros del Barrio's single King Kong has entered the charts. This is a group put together by Eliot Rivera, former member of the Lebron Brothers it has been released on the Latin Soul Records label. Viejoteca July Top 25
